This morning, a group of police officers converged on the Parkside Terrace apartment complex in San Jose. There, they found a man, Varun Kumar, inside a stolen vehicle. As the officers approached the vehicle, Kumar rammed it into them, which caused their patrol car to spin around in a circle. Kumar then began a desperate attempt to escape. During this process, the police officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by Kumar and his stolen vehicle. Subsequently, police shot and killed Kumar.
This was the sixth officer-involved shooting for the SJPD and their third fatal shooting in 2011. The shooting was located less than three miles from where my father works.
